Royal Smile – Recipe below from David Embury’s ‘The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks’

1 part Grenadine

2 parts Lemon Juice

4 parts Gin

4 parts Apple Brandy

Shake with cracked ice. The relative proportions of gin and applejack can be varied to suit the individual taste. Some recipes call for the addition of 1 egg white to each 2 drinks.

I’m not sure which royal it refers to, first popping up in Jack’s Manual from 1910, it seemed to have a certain amount of staying power to pop up in Embury in 1951.

And it’s a little bit of a shame it doesn’t have more information as it’s a great drink, I tried this on the 28th with Applejack, but no egg white, and then after my Applejack stash was ‘appropriated’ tried it again a couple of days later with cognac and egg white, both versions were winners, the gin (Edinburgh) paired beautifully with the brandy on both occasions, and even the 8-2-1 ration worked on my guests palates, its always good to come across a Applejack pairing that works, especially one that works on palates that don’t just belong to jaded old bartenders.

With the royal wedding just around the corner we may have to utilise this for our wedding party here at Goat.
